Bio

Emilia Cortez is a Yuma, Arizona native who has dedicated her career to economic development, public service, and strengthening her community. She currently serves as an Economic Development Specialist for the Quechan Indian Tribe, where her work focuses on economic development initiatives, small business support, transportation, tourism, and regional partnerships.

Emilia is actively involved in community leadership throughout Yuma County. She serves on the First Things First Yuma Regional Partnership Council and the Yuma Crossing National Heritage Area Corporation Board. She also serves as Vice Chair of the Yuma County Library District Board of Trustees. Through these roles, Emilia continues to advocate for education, culture, history, and opportunities for future generations.

Emilia holds a Master of Business Administration with an emphasis in leadership from Northern Arizona University and a Bachelor of Science in Public Administration.

For more than sixteen years, Emilia has remained involved in community service and philanthropy. She is active with the Yuma Rotary Club and has volunteered with numerous organizations supporting children, families, education, and community development. She is especially passionate about early childhood education and creating opportunities for young people to become the next generation of community leaders.

Her commitment to service has earned her two nominations for the Heart of Yuma awards for volunteerism and leadership. Emilia is also a proud graduate of Yuma High School, Class of 2003.

Emilia lives in Yuma County with her husband, Anthony “Tony” Sharkey, and their dogs, Jolene and Dolly Maize.
